New Beginnings, New Starts, Constant Improvements In The Evolution Of Our Lives…
That’s what this time of year is all about and I myself am beginning a new diet lifestyle that simultaneously looks boldly to the future and brings the best of the past with it. I will spend the next year creating and molding my Food Wine Fitness Diet (FWF Diet) by embracing all the best the Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle has to offer.
The Mediterranean Diet & Lifestyle
We know that people living in the Mediterranean and eating their historical traditional diet and living a lifestyle in complete compliance with their cultural heritage end up being the healthiest people in the world. These Mediterraneans have nearly nonexistent levels of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and countless other “common” and “modern” conditions and diseases of the Standard American Diet (SAD) and Lifestyle. In America nearly 70% of us are overweight while in France the obesity rate is roughly 10% – they must be doing something right! It is completely normal and common for Mediterraneans to live extremely active, happy and healthy lives well into their 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and even 100+ I remember many instances of family members who never adjusted to the SAD who could live like this…
I knew a great-uncle who at 90 would paint the exterior of his whole house and get on the roof to fix leaks.
I knew a grandmother who in her 90’s could shop during the Christmas Season from the mall opening at 6:00 AM until it closed at Midnight and still be going strong; she had been walking, standing, carrying bags nonstop for that whole 18+ hours.
How Are Mediterraneans So Healthy?
This is what I intend to spend the next year working to find out by fully embracing in its entirety the Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle. I firmly believe it’s the ONLY way to really experience 100% of the physical, spiritual, and emotional benefits. My initial turn towards the lifestyle of my own Mediterranean roots has already helped me lose 100 lbs. and has brought me to 220 lb. I know by jumping head first and being totally immersed in the lifestyle I will achieve and maintain my own optimal weight and health.
Doctors, Nutritionists, Scientists, Psychologists, Sociologists, and many others have been studying and trying to understand the “secrets of the Mediterranean Diet” and the solution to the “French Paradox” and everyone has come up with their own theory and idea. There are countless research reports discussing different aspects of the Mediterranean Diet and searching to see if this one aspect is the silver bullet and key to the whole mystery of Mediterranean health. Could it be…
- The Red Wine
- The High Fiber
- The Mostly Plant Based Diet
- The Exercise
- The Religious Practices Alternating between Fasting and Feasting Periods
- Social Interactions
- Slower Stress-free Lifestyle
- Mid-day Naps
- Organic Produce
- Grass-Fed Free-Range Meats and Animal Products
- Raw Milk and Dairy Products
- Lack of Processed Foods in the Diet
- Strict Cultural Rules Regarding Food
- Mediterranean Relationship to Food VS American Relationship to Food
All of these aspects are important; however, there is no silver bullet, no magic pill we can take. The solution lies in the complexity of the whole, in the synergy between all these different aspects and maybe even others we don’t even know about working together and complementing each other and strengthening each other.
I know we can’t all just pick up and move to a farm and live like Mediterraneans did 200 years ago and that’s where I’ll be working to tailor the true Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle into something that can be done here in our modern world – this is what my Mediterranean Diet Lifestyle is all about. I have to figure out how to incorporate this ancient amazingly healthy diet and lifestyle into our modern unhealthy world. I have a family, I work 10 hours a day sitting at a desk with a 45 minute commute each way; so I admit this journey will not be easy but I know the rewards in the end will be worth it. We can do this together! Will you join me on this journey to ancient health in our modern world? Drop your name and email below to sign up and get the latest updates as I post.
