Buon Natale, Joyeux Noel, Feliz Navidad and of course Merry Christmas!
Let the Feast Begin!
Today is Christmas Day and marks the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a time of great joy and happiness for billions of Christians around the world and the Traditions surrounding Christmas make up a major part of the cultural mindset around the Mediterranean this time of year.
Christmas, like Easter, is an integral holiday throughout the Mediterranean. In fact in the traditional Mediterranean Lifestyle the year can be summed up as heading into Christmas, coming out of Christmas, heading into Easter and coming out of Easter – it’s all part of the rhythm and balance of the Mediterranean, feast and fast times.
Leading up to the great Christmas Feast is the Season of Advent. Advent is a joyful expectation, a positive penitential season in the expectation of Christmas. This season is similar to the cleaning preparations done before an important visitor is coming to our home; we do it with joy and excitement looking forward towards Christmas. Fasting and prayerful reflection is a part of this time and I always view these times of year as a detox for the Soul and Body.
My celebrations encompass the full Traditional 12 Days of Christmas, starting on the night of Christmas Eve(24 December) and continuing all the way through to the Feast of The Epiphany(6 January). It is a time of great joy filled with lots of good food and wine shared with loved ones. My motto for this Feast is good wine, great food, and excellent company.
We must never forget though the real meaning of this holy season and it’s a tradition for me every Christmas to watch this little video clip that beautifully sums up the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
From the bottom of my heart I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and God Bless!
